You can tell the summer is officially over. There are more rumors running through the big financial houses than there are at a teenagers first day of high school. Most recently the biggest rumor is that an Nyse Euronext merger with Nymex is imminent. Internet message boards are rampant with the rumors and some investors are scrambling to take advantage of this possible consolidation. TheStreet.com mentioned last week that there would be merger speculation regarding the two exchange behemoths. However, some analysts are still quietly waiting for Ben Bernanke to make the rate cut which is thought will set off the this enormous deal. Nymex is currently in preliminary talks with a buyer for their $700M high tech building. It is believed that the merger announcement will follow the signing of this real estate transaction. So it seems that rumors of an imminent merger may just be one of those fall back to school rumors. It would be interesting to know who would start such a rumor. Many people may be jumping the gun on this type of speculation. Yet, sometimes rumors end up being true and if this one proves to be true it could make a lot of people a lot of money.
