NYSE EURONEXT (NYX): Is John Thain Leaving NYSE Euronext For Citigroup?
The speculation has reached an all time high. Even Jim Cramer has gotten in on the action. It seems like everybody is talking about John Thain taking over Chuck Prince's position at Citigroup. Thain recently said on CNBC that he absolutely has not spoken to Citigroup about taking Prince's place. However, he did not mention if he would take a position if offered. Instead he smiled at the camera like a school boy with a crush. Perhaps he does have feelings for Citigroup. Maybe that is because he would be getting more than the $4+M he is already getting from the NYSE. The question is "Would John Thain actually leave his creation NYSE Euronext?". The answer is yes he would. Earlier this year Joe Capone of SMaRT Financial Partners LLC, stated that John Thain said that "he would steps down from NYSE on or before January 2009". Capone went on to predict
"he will either join Citigroup's (C) board and be viewed as a possible successor to Chuck Prince or will replace him outright." Maybe Citigroup is anxious and wants Thain now. Chuck Prince has been a huge disappointment for Citigroup. They are feeling the heat from their major investor to do something quickly. Thain may be pressured to step down from the Nyse earlier than he anticipated.
